Community Isn’t Just a Word to Us

At Hall-Wynne Funeral Service; it’s a commitment we show up for every single day.

Twice a year, our team gears up for one of our favorite traditions: our bi-annual community appreciation barbecue. It is our small way of giving back to the dedicated individuals who spend their lives serving, comforting, and protecting the families of Durham. This season, our team hit the pits and managed to dish out over 800 plates of delicious barbecue, turning a massive culinary effort into a powerful day of gratitude and connection.

By the Numbers: 340 Pounds of Barbecue and Hundreds of Smiled-On Faces

Feeding a community takes a lot of heart—and a lot of meat. For this event, our team smoked and prepped an incredible 340 pounds of barbecue to ensure no one walked away hungry.

We focused our efforts heavily on Durham's incredible first responders. Over 500 plates were delivered directly to the local police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel who keep our neighborhoods safe around the clock. The remaining 300-plus plates were dedicated to local church staff members—the administrative teams, ministers, and caretakers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to provide spiritual guidance and emotional support to our community every week.

Special Delivery: Straight from Our Staff to Our Local Churches

What makes this bi-annual event truly special for us is the personal connection. We don't just hire a catering service to drop off food; the Hall-Wynne staff handles the entire operation from start to finish. Every single one of those 300 plates bound for local church offices was hand-delivered by a member of our own team.

Driving around Durham and stepping into these familiar sanctuaries with hot, fresh meals gave us the perfect opportunity to catch up, say thank you in person, and strengthen the bonds we share with our local religious organizations. It’s a collaborative effort we look forward to all year, and seeing the surprise and appreciation on the faces of church staff members makes every mile driven worth it.

A Tradition Built on Giving Back

At Hall-Wynne, we understand that a community is only as strong as the people who support it. First responders and faith leaders are the backbone of Durham, often meeting people on their hardest days with strength and grace. Serving them a hot meal twice a year is the least we can do to express our deep admiration for their daily sacrifices.

To everyone who helped us prep, pack, and distribute this massive haul—and to the incredible public servants and church teams who received them—thank you. We are already looking forward to firing up the grills again for the next one!
