Duke Anatomical Gift Program Visit

Honoring Life from Every Perspective: A Day of Learning and Leaps at Duke

Hall-Wynne Care Team walking in the Davidson building on Duke Campus

At Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, we believe that truly compassionate care requires a continuous dedication to learning, perspective, and community connection.

Our professionals handle life’s most delicate transitions daily, which is why we regularly seek opportunities to deepen our understanding of the care ecosystem surrounding us right here in Durham. Recently, our entire care team stepped away from the office for a unique day of professional development that took us from the cutting edge of anatomical science to the highest architectural peak on West Campus.

Gratitude and Science at the Duke Anatomical Gift Program

The Hall-Wynne Care Team visiting the Duke Anatomical Gift Program.

We began our morning with a profoundly educational visit to the Duke Anatomical Gift Program.

As deathcare professionals, we maintain the utmost reverence for the human body and the choices individuals make regarding their final disposition. Getting to interface with the coordinators and view the environment where these incredible anatomical gifts are stewarded was an incredibly moving experience for our team.

The program’s laboratory supports the education of hundreds of medical students, residents, and specialized clinicians each year. Seeing the profound care, strict medical ethics, and absolute dignity with which the program treats its "silent teachers" resonated deeply with our own core values.

It was a powerful reminder of the ripple effect a single life can have, transforming medical education and ultimately touching the lives of thousands of future patients. We walked away with an even greater sense of pride in how our professions intersect to honor these selfless legacies.

239 Steps Together: Bonding on the Duke Bell Tower Staircase

After a morning focused on deep, quiet reflection, we decided it was time to tackle a slightly louder, decidedly steeper Durham tradition: climbing the Duke University Chapel bell tower. Rising 210 feet above the heart of campus, the Collegiate Gothic tower is a beautiful masterclass in North Carolina stone. Getting to the viewing platform, however, requires a bit of collective willpower.

Let’s just say that the tight, winding, windowless stone spiral staircase does not offer a casual stroll. Every single member of our team took on the challenge, trading jokes and words of encouragement as the handrails narrowed and our calves definitely started to feel the burn. Tackling all 239 steps together was a literal exercise in teamwork—and a reminder that the best views in life are earned step by step.

Emerging onto the open-air viewing platform next to the massive 50-bell carillon made every single flight worth it. Looking out over the vast canopy of trees stretching across the Bull City, Duke Forest, and downtown Durham gave us a breathtaking, literal high point to cap off our day.

Bringing It Back to You

Whether we are standing inside a state-of-the-art medical skills laboratory or catching our breath high above the campus quads, our focus always circles back to the families we serve in Durham. A day like this reminds us that our profession is about connection—connecting history to the present, science to profound human empathy, and our team closely to one another so we can better support you when it matters most.

The next time you visit us at Hall-Wynne, feel free to ask our professionals about our trek up the tower. We might still be stretching out our legs, but our hearts and minds are more energized than ever to provide your family with the exceptional care you deserve.
