
DURHAM – William “Bill” Harold Harris, 65, of Durham, died Saturday, August 14, 2010 at Hospice at Meadowlands. Born on April 13, 1945, Bill was the son of the late Thomas Jefferson Harris, Sr. and Dorothy Stanfield Harris.
Bill grew up in Raeford, NC and graduated from Hoke County High School in 1963. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated from Campbell University in 1968. As a young boy, he developed a lifelong passion for cars. Living in Cincinnati, OH in the 1970s, he came to love baseball. Upon moving back to North Carolina, he became an avid Atlanta Braves fan. He retired in 2008 from S.H. Basnight & Sons. Bill enjoyed spending time with his family, visits to the beach as well as camping and car shows. He loved and served his church, Aldersgate UMC. He was well-known in his family for sayings, dubbed “Bill-isms.”
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Kaye Whitfield Harris, a daughter, Jessica Harris of Durham; a son, Jeffrey Harris and wife, Cassie, and his very special granddaughters, Zoe and Maia Harris of Martinez, CA, and one brother, Thomas Jefferson Harris, Jr. of Fayetteville.
The family wishes to thank all the staff of UNC Lineberger Cancer Center, UNC Hospice, and Hospice at Meadowlands for their loving care of this very special man.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be held 11:00 AM, Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with the Rev. W. Douglas Lain and the Rev. Johnny Branch, officiating.
Friends may visit from 6:00-8:00 PM, Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1320 Umstead Road, Durham, NC 27712.
