Marjorie Stallcup Watkins, age 92, died Saturday, April 11, 2009 at Croasdaile Village. Mrs. Watkins first came to Durham as a student at Duke University where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1948. In 1940 she received her Master’s in Botany from Wellesley College. After raising her family, Mrs. Watkins returned to Duke University as curator of the Botany Department for 25 years, retiring in 1982.
Mrs. Watkins was a member of First Baptist Church and taught primary through high school Sunday school classes. She gave back much to her community through her 22 years of volunteer work with Durham Regional Hospital and the Duke Retirees.
Surviving are her two sons: Richard Lee Watkins of Virginia Beach, VA; Kenneth Watkins of Surf City, NC; her daughters: Carol Jane Watkins of Cambridge, MA; and Shirley Watkins of Dresden, ME; one granddaughter, Ashley Watkins Hendricks; and one great-grandson, Anthony Conser Hendricks. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Watkins.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, April 18, 2009 from the Chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.
Friends may visit Friday evening, April 17, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home.
