Thomas Eugene “Gene” Durham, 82, of Andrews Store Road in Pittsboro died October 20, 2010 in his family home place that he shared with his brother and sister-in-law.
Gene was born October 28, 1927 in Chatham County, the son of Edward Watson Durham and Jennie Florence Herndon Durham. He was a 1947 graduate of Pittsboro High School, and served in the US Navy on the USS Comstock for 4 years. Gene served as the Route 3 Pittsboro rural route mail carrier for 30 years.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Ruby Durham; sisters, Geraldine Harris of Raleigh and Mary Julia Matlock of Durham; 13 nieces and nephews; 23 great-nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Durham who resided in Burlington, and William Durham who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The funeral service for Mr. Durham will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, October 24, 2010 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro with the Rev. Virginia Taylor and the Rev. Sercy Jackson presiding. Interment will follow in Lystra Baptist Church cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 – 1:45 pm Sunday at the funeral home; at other times they may visit at the residence.
