To the Family:
I am shocked by the news of Fred’s passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to Barbara, Fred III, Andy and the entire family. I knew Fred for better than 35 years and we have shared many a story and experience. I will never forget the family days in Myrtle Beach, Mebane outings, and his Texas visits. My son proudly shows off the handmade chinks Fred gave him as a graduation present. He was a one of a kind character, heavily opinionated and loyal to his beliefs, and a loving family man. I will miss sharing Texas lore and news with Fred. RIP dear friend.

Condolence from Natalie Hodge Dodge on November 2nd, 2011 12:00 am

So very sorry for your loss. Loved the memories made with Fred and your sweet family during summers in Myrtle Beach.

Condolence from Willie & Susan Bolick on November 2nd, 2011 12:00 am

Barbara, Andy, and Fred III,
We share your grief. Fred was, in the words of Kris Kristofferson,”a walking contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction”: conservative/liberal, God-fearing/profane, redneck/intellectual, hard-as-nails/big-hearted, dead-serious/funny, storyteller/truthteller. His passions–family, dogs, good literature including cowboy poets!, music, conversation, laughter, NC State, good whiskey, cheap beer–defined him. Fred led us to John Henry Faulk’s Christmas memory on NPR. Whenever you listen to that, know Fred is there. When you read “A River Runs Through It,” know Fred is there. We know that, if there is a heaven, when Fred arrives, Tom will be first in line to welcome him.
Willie, Susan, Laney, and Tom

“Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it.”

Barbara and Family – It must be very difficult for a time to now be without someone you have intimately known for many years. Fred and I were the same age and so his passing is a reminder to me that life, while full of the new, can be fragile in terms of the presence of those dear ones we love. We are all reminded by the death of someone we know that we need to be full of life each and every day, and do not delay being in touch with others. I believe there are many, many people who are holding you up in their thoughts and prayers. You and your are special. Our connection to sheep allows us to better understand the true meaning of many of the Scriptures.

What an unexpected happening.
Know the grief you must be experiencing. Hopefully your valued
memories together will be especially meaningful during this time.
Will always remember Fred for his
special humor, honesty and fairness.
His stories were special for all

was honored a few year back to receive Fred’s special “rope” of luck and good fortune, which I still have. You and the family will
be in my prayers.

Barbara,I was sorry to read about Fred’s passing. It is indeed true in Fred’s case that only the good die young. He was much too young.
I seem to recall that he was a brother in Theta Chi fraternity while at State. If true, then he was a fraternity brother of minedifferent chapter, of course.
Please accept my sincere condolences.
Hope you are in good health.
