Charles Frank Hauser Chuck died at home on February 10, 2009 at the age of 74. Born in Durham, NC May 23, 1934 to Dr. Charles Roy Hauser and Madge Lucile Baltimore Hauser. He received his undergraduate degree from Duke University and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society and a member of the swim team. He then attended the University of NC at Chapel Hill and Brown University in Providence, RI where he attained a Doctorate in Organic Chemistry. His post-doctorate work was completed in 1962 at the University of Florida, in Gainesville, FL. He worked in Charleston, WV for Union Carbide for 30 years until his retirement. During his time in Charleston, he was involved for many years with the Cub Scouts as a Cub Master and the Boy Scouts as a Troop leader. The Scouting hikes and camping trips were greatly enjoyed by Chuck and his scouts. Another great pastime was dancing. Square dancing, round dancing and clog dancing were regular weekend activities. For many years he led the West Virginia Mountain Valley Cloggers in performances throughout the state of WV with special shows in Myrtle Beach, SC and Fontana Dam, NC. Additionally, he was involved with First Presbyterian Church in Charleston, WV as a Sunday school teacher for both elementary and high school aged youth. In 1981 he joined the congregation of Morris Memorial United Methodist Church in Charleston, WV. For more than ten years he was an active member of the church, serving as chairperson of the Administrative Council and other church leadership roles. In 1992, he retired and moved to Pittsboro, NC where he became a gentleman farmer on 12 acres of land. He was constantly planting, pruning, weeding, cutting grass, and all other activities associated with farming. His church in Pittsboro, Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church, was a great source of friendship and activity for him as well. He helped with peeling potatoes and stirring the pots at the fall Brunswick stew and the spring Barbeque as often as he was able. As a member of the choir, he actively participated in their special Christmas programs with Pleasant Hill Church and in singing at the nursing home in Pittsboro. Additionally, he took great pride in maintaining the Brown’s Chapel Memorial Garden in tip-top shape for all who came to meditate on the grounds. In his second childhood, he took up building and flying various model airplanes. He strove to excel in keeping them from crashing to the ground by mastering the computer air flight simulator during the winter months so that he was prepared to fly when the weather was good. An avid Civil War buff, he read anything he could find on the subject and visited historic sites as he was able. His grandchildren were a special joy to him with the most recent additions being twin boys to his youngest son and a daughter to his oldest granddaughter. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
