DURHAM- Andrea Hoyle Goodwin, age 65, died peacefully January 22, 2017, at the Hock Family Pavilion in Durham. Andrea was born in Morganton, NC, in 1951, the much-loved eldest child of Hugh and Elizabeth Carroll.

Andrea’s greatest joys were found in her family, and in her service as a Registered Nurse, a career in caring for others, particularly the elderly, that spanned more than forty years.

Andrea is survived by her three children and their families: Jennifer Jewett and husband Randy, of Durham; Jeffrey Swink of Shelby, NC; and Joshua Swink, wife Annie, of Watertown, NY; five grandchildren: Tate Jewett, Caleb Swink, Layla Swink, Maggie Swink, and Jonas Swink. She is also survived by her two sisters:  Adaire Salt and husband, Al, also of Durham, and Mary Carroll-Hackett of Rice, VA. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David (Goody) Goodwin, formerly of Sheffield, VT, as well as by her eldest grandson, Beydn Swink.

The family will hold a private service at a date to be determined. As a means of honoring Andrea’s own professional dedication to caring for others near the end of their lives, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to: The Hock Family Pavilion, Duke Homecare & Hospice, 4023 North Roxboro Street, Durham, NC 27704, dhch.duhs.duke.edu.

I’m so heartbroken to hear this. I feel blessed to have spent time with her several months ago. I met Andrea through work, and she was so kind and genuine. In an environment that can make so many people jaded, she truly cared about others. (She always spoke about her “best friend,” Tate!) I will be thinking of her and her family. I’ll miss you, Andrea. <3
