
Virginia Sue Williams, a true servant of The Lord, has passed to be with him for ever more.
Sue was the eldest daughter of Leola and Michael A. Williams of Dunn, NC. During 9th grade at Dunn High School, she was offered a scholarship to attend Sacred Heart Academy in Belmont, NC. She was Salutatorian of her class in 1949. She entered the Convent of the Sisters’ of Mercy. She took the name Sister Mary Virginia. She received her Bachelor of Science at Sacred Heart College. In 1966, and a Master of Music Degree at Marywood University. She remained in the convent for 21 years teaching at Sacred Heart College, St. Benedict’s, in Belmont, St. Patrick’s in Charlotte, taught music to advanced students and was Manager of Food Services while in the convent. Her last assignment was at Nazareth Orphanage in Raleigh, NC.
The entered the secular world in 1970. She taught music for 3 years in Warrenton, NC and at Cameron Park School in Hillsborough, NC from 1973-1996. In 1986, Sue married Walter H. Winkler. In 2014 Sue was a resident at Jordan Oaks, Cary, NC and Pruitt’s Health Care, Raleigh, NC.
Preceded in death were her parents, her husband, two sisters, Lucy Williams and Frances Crawford.
She leaves behind loving brothers, John Williams of Greensboro, Mike Williams of Charlotte and Martin Williams of Dunn; sisters, Mary Davis of Merritt Island, FL, Mattie Gregory of Raleigh, Anne Sherrill of Clemmons and Sally Norris of Pittsboro, NC; seven step-children, Elaine Overby, Kathy Winkler, Terry Martin, Carolyn Vosh, Mary Winkler, Irene Crowder, Jim Winkler and many step-grandchildren.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be offered 12:00 PM Friday, May 15 from St. Matthew Catholic Church, 1001 Mason Road, Durham, NC 27712. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Christian burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Flowers are acceptable or donations may be made in Sue’s memory to Sacred Heart Convent, 100 Mercy Drive, Belmont, NC 28012 or to St. Matthew Catholic Church, 1001 Mason Road, Durham, NC 27712.
