Posted By Hall-Wynne On January 18, 2012 @ 12:00 am In Obituaries | 3 Comments

Virginia Churchill died peacefully Wednesday morning, January 18th, 2012 after a period of declining health. She was born in Durham, the youngest and last surviving child of Marshall Haney and Lena Newsome Haney.

Virginia spent most of her adult life in Pleasantville, New Jersey with her husband of 35 years, Fredrick Churchill. She and Fred owned and operated several successful businesses in the Pleasantville area including a residential community, a restaurant, and a fish & tackle shop with deep sea boat rentals. After her husband’s death she continued running their remaining business for several years before returning to her hometown of Durham. She was a devoted wife and mother and was actively involved in her community through her extensive volunteer work with the American Cancer Society, the March of Dimes, and UNICEF.

Virginia had a keen mind and enjoyed conversing and visiting with friends, working crossword puzzles, and keeping up with the latest political events. Even as she was nearing the end, she kept her zest for life and bold sense of humor. She will be greatly missed by her daughter Lee Churchill and her numerous friends and family.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, 11:30 a.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Durham. The service will be conducted by her nephew Rev. Timothy Creel.

Friends may visit from 10-11:00am on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 West Main Street, Durham, NC 27701.

Condolence from David Creel on January 21st, 2012 12:00 am

Aunt Virginia was indeed a person with a great sense of humor. As the youngest of the Creel children, I remember we were all very excited to hear she was visiting us at Christmas. She always had such funny stories of Atlantic City, New Jersey. She once introduced me to Jerry Lewis and Kirk Douglas. Once she had returned to N.C. and needed to transfer her driving license, she balked at listing her full name as Virginia “Dare” Churchill, and told the examiner;– I have always hated that middle name! A Smart and funny woman, we will surely miss her! David & Judy Creel
