Posted By Hall-Wynne On November 9, 2012 @ 12:00 am In Obituaries | No Comments

Vergie Cash Howard, 89 passed away November 9, 2012 at Ashton Place in Greensboro, NC. She was born December 9, 1922 in Durham County.
She retired from Chatham County Public Schools after 26 years where she began her career in cafeteria management and continued her education to fulfill her desire to become a certified teacher’s assistant at Pittsboro Primary School. There, she nurtured many precious children from kindergarten through second grade. She graduated with honors from Lowe’s Grove High School in 1940 and continued to enjoy her yearly reunion with classmates until her decline in health. During WWII, Mother worked as a nurse’s assistant at Camp Hospital in Pittsboro.
Mother would have celebrated her 90th Birthday on December 9th with her earthly family and now she will celebrate with her loved ones in what will be the most glorious of celebrations.
Over the years many have sat at her table enjoying her Southern culinary talents of homemade biscuits and gravy, the creamiest mashed potatoes, chicken stew, banana pudding, her special lemon cheesecake, caramel cakes triple icing, and chocolate pies. She was the happiest when she could prepare meals for her loved ones and friends.
Mother to us, Granny to some, Mrs. Howard or Vergie to others, she will be greatly missed.
She is survived by son Larry Howard and wife Jan, daughters Nancy Saitta, Jeneverette Reeves and husband Bud, daughter in law Brenda Howard, 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren, sisters Katie Sue Mayberry and Lula Mae Stone.
She was preceded in death by husband Percy J. Howard, son Gerald Howard, and son in law Peter Saitta.
Visitation will be Sunday, November 11, 2012 from 5-7pm at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro, N.C. and from 2-3pm Monday, November 12, 2012 at Bells Baptist Church, 1274 Farrington Road, Apex, N.C. The funeral service will be 3pm at Bells Baptist Church. Interment will be at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery, 1785 Mt. Gilead Church Road, Pittsboro, N.C.
We want to express our gratitude to her special caregivers in Durham, Tracy and Alice and the caring staff at Ashton Place in Greensboro. In addition, the family deeply appreciates the love and care given to our Mother by her roommate Mrs. Fitts, at Ashton Place.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro at 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, N.C., 27405.

Miss Vergie was a wonderful woman. She was a very special teacher’s assistant in the kindergarten to my daughter, Emily. She was a co-worker as I taught across the hall. She was always kind and considerate of others. I will always remember her. Godspeed, Vergie. Your memory lives on in all the lives you have touched while on this earth.

My dear sweet Aunt Vergie. I love you, you were always so kind to me. I remember growing up around you and Uncle Percy. Him taking me riding on the golf cart while you made me my very own special homemade biscuits to take back home with me. Your laugh was amazing your smile would make a cold day full of life and warmth. I love how you loved me and my family always showing concern and care for us all. You always made sure that I did well in school and to be happy with what I did. Thank you, thank you to both you and Uncle Percy for showing me love and kindness you always were like my 2nd great grandparents next to my momma kate. I will miss you and I know now Uncle Percy, your brothers and the rest of the family are so happy to have you back at their table. Smiling and showing them such amazing love. Love always – April – Katie Sue’s great granddaughter
