Posted By Hall-Wynne On July 7, 2012 @ 12:00 am In Obituaries | No Comments

Thomas Isidor Lenard, husband, father and long-time community banker, died at home on Saturday in Durham, NC, after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 63 years old.

Tom, a native of Brooklyn, and Jean, his wife of nearly 40 years, raised their sons, Matthew and Christopher, in Ellenville, NY. Tom’s career as a community banker at Ellenville National Bank spanned almost 30 years. He had a passion for helping local businesses thrive and took great joy in realizing the successes of his colleagues and clients, many of whom became lifelong friends.

As an active member of civic and community life, he served on the Village of Ellenville Planning Board and as President of the Noonday Club. An avid runner, Tom co-founded the annual Run Like the Wind 10K road race, now in its 28th year. He also volunteered for the Ellenville First Aid & Rescue Squad and Little League Baseball. Above all, Tom’s greatest loves were his wife and two sons. A beloved husband and a regular at his sons’ sporting events, concerts and theatrical productions, Tom supported and cared for his family every day of his life.

Tom was the third son born to Slovenian parents Isidor Lenard and Mira Habjan Lenard. He graduated from Brooklyn’s Bishop Ford High School and St. Francis College, earning a degree in economics in 1971. Tom is survived by his wife and two sons; a brother, William; daughters-in-law, Melody Moezzi and Monika Lenard; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be held at Holy Infant Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 13.

Visitation will be held at Durham’s Hall-Wynne funeral home from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 12.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Cornucopia Cancer Support Center 5517 Durham Chapel Hill Blvd., Suite 1000 Durham, NC 27707.

Condolence from Jim Calder on July 11th, 2012 12:00 am

Tom Lenard was one of the nicest people that I have ever known in my life. He was kind, friendly, extremely optimistic and not afraid to show his affection for his friends. I met Tom at Bishop Ford H.S. back in Brooklyn and we became close friends after I invited him to a New Year’s Eve party in 1966. We would share many experiences over the years, both good and bad. Tom was the Best Man at my wedding and he was the Godfather of my daughter.
Tom might be gone now, to his well- earned heavenly reward but in one sense he will never really die. The positive message of his life will live on forever in the hearts and minds of those who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
My deepest sympathy to Jean, Matthew and Chris as well as to the rest of his family

Our deepest condolences to the Lenard family, Jean, Chris, Mat, Melody and Monika. Tom was a real close friend of our family for many years. I felt he was like a brother to me. We confided in each other a lot, joked a lot and had many good times together. He will be sorely missed as he was a large part of our lives in Ellenvile and Pa. He sincerely had an impact in our lives and will never be forgotten. Walt!

What does one say when one hears of the passing of an old High School friend? Remember the days eating lunch in the Bishop Ford cafeteria? Nah, there have to be better memories than that. But what I miss are the memories that could have been had I tried to keep in touch when I moved to Texas 35 years ago. I envy this generation with their ability to keep in touch so easily via electronic media. I didn’t know Tom was on Facebook until Jim Calder informed me of his passing and I finally got around to looking for him there. Too little, too late. Reading Facebook postings, his obituary and the guest posts here gives me a sense of the great life he had. I guess now all I can do is pray for the repose of his soul, extend my condolences to his family, and look to reconnect with other old friends before it is too late. Rest in peace Tom.

Tom Lenard and my father are and will always be great friends.
I have fond memories of going to Evansville, NY for weekend family trips as kids— visiting the apple orchids, playing touch football with Tom and the boys, and non-stop activities. As a dedicated Yankee Fan in the early 1990s, I will never forget the moment that I stepped into the old Yankee Stadium. Tom got tickets for my dad, my brother and I, and him and the boys. We were about 10 rows back on the first base line and my hero Don Mattingly was playing. I will never forget that moment and Tom’s generosity. Tom and the family made several trips out to PA after we moved. He was always full of energy, doing stretching exercises on our back porch to start the day. I am so glad that Tom and Jean were at our wedding.
Abraham Lincoln once said “And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” There has never been a truer example of that statement, than the life of Tom Lenard.
