Terence Michael McCann

Posted By Hall-Wynne On July 8, 2012 @ 12:00 am In Obituaries | No Comments

DURHAM: Terence Michael McCann, 84, died July 8, 2012. Born in Manhattan November 30, 1927 to Irish immigrants, Terence McCann Fermanagh and Margaret Mulhern McCann Leitrim.

Terry is survived by his wife, Bodie Kavanagh McCann, who treasured the pleasure and comfort of his love for over 26 years; a daughter Marie McCann and her partner, Matt Miller and two beloved grandsons, Sean and Josh Miller of Dallas, TX; sister, Dorothy McCann of Haverstraw NY and faithful cousins, Rosemary and Kerry Gynegrowski of the Bronx. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife and mother of his children, Marie Wilisch McCann; his precious daughter Deirdre and his sister Peggy McCann.

Terry’s education included St. Catherine of Genoa Catholic School and Power Memorial High School in New York City, Fairleigh-Dickinson and NC State Universities. He served in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean conflict. His professional life brought him to Durham with Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company in 1965, from which he retired in 1997 as Transportation Manager.

Terry was an active and faithful member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and participated in many ways in serving others as long as he was able. His most recent work had been as a volunteer hospital Eucharistic minister. He was a retired member of the Knights of Columbus and served as a prior Grand Knight.

Terry loved deeply and generously with all his heart. He made everyone feel special. He loved golf, Duke basketball, Notre Dame football and the Mets—he never forgave the Dodgers for moving! He was a wonderful man who was always faithful to his God, his family, his friends, his country and his cats. He made this world a better place.

Terry’s last few years were spent in a long fight with the pulmonary consequences of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic and Parkinsonism. He held the entire staff at Physical Therapy of NC in highest regard and remained grateful for their support and care. He stayed encouraged by and active in the Parkinson’s exercise class at the Duke Center for Living. The kindness and quality care he received from the doctors and staff in the Durham Regional Hospital CCU was of the highest order. He was especially grateful for the long time care of Drs. Tony Huang, Stuart Manning and Ron Vereen. His determination and faith remained strong throughout this journey. Terry will be deeply missed by those of us who were lucky enough to have known and loved him. We take comfort in knowing that he rests in peace.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered 11:00 AM Thursday from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 810 W. Chapel Hill St. Durham, with Fr. Dan McLellan, OFM presiding. Interment will follow in St. Matthew Catholic Cemetery. Friends may visit 6-9 PM Wednesday at Hall Wynne Funeral Service.

Donations in Terry’s memory may be made to Immaculate Conception Church, 901-A West Chapel Hill St. Durham 27701. On-line memorials: hallwynne.com.

Bodie, I am so sorry to hear about Terry’s passing. During the few times that I met him the fact that he was a very special person came shining through immediately and honestly….no pretense, just genuine caring about who you are. Few people are like that.

Please know that I will be thinking about you often tomorrow and in the coming weeks.
