He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Lucretia Stokes; and his two brothers, Carlton and Leslie Barnes.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2016 from Grey Stone Church with Dr. Clay Waters presiding. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

Dear Stokes and John,

I am so saddened to hear of Uncle Simon’s passing. I know the road ahead of you is a hard one as you learn to go through each day without him. I imagine you will want to pick up the phone to call him or just pop in to see him a million times. I hope you find comfort in knowing he is with the Lord and your mother, my father, Leslie and Grandmother and so many others. While we feel the loss of his presence here with us, he is enjoying the ultimate family reunion in heaven.

You will remain in my prayers.

Jill Hagen

Condolence from Andi Odom Bowen on July 16th, 2016 5:30 pm

John and Stokes,

Your father was a sweet man, who took the ladies (my mother, Lulie Odom, Betty Phillips and Betty Umstead) to the Elk’s Lodge every Friday evening. It enabled the ladies to get out and mingle with their Elk friends. So sweet of him. We used to call them Simon’s Harem. I also remember your Dad growing up, when I was a young adult and he did a wine tasting for my club…rest in peace, Simon…you are greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
