DURHAM – Ruby Luquire Brown, 99, died Sunday, February 19, 2017, at her home in Duke Park where she had lived since 1948.

Mrs. Brown was born in Durham and was the daughter of the late Eugene A. Luquire and Cleo Small Luquire. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Charles Vertis Brown, and two brothers, Eugene Luquire and Algie Luquire.

She is survived by her children, Councilman Charles V. Brown, Jr., and his wife, Suzanne, of Denver, CO, Councilman Eugene A. Brown, and his wife, Signe, of Durham, NC, and Bonnie B. Hood of Topsail Beach, NC; brother, David Luquire, of Burgaw, NC; grandchildren, Braxton Hood, Richard Hood (Erika), Brian Brown, Christine Johnson (Bradley), Cody Brown, and Nicholas Brown; great grandchildren, Lennon Brown, Eleanor and Nolan Johnson.

Mrs. Brown was educated in the Durham public schools. She was employed as a bookkeeper for Baldwin’s Department Store in Durham as well as being a homemaker. Ruby was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. She had been an active member of the Exchangette Womens Club. For many years she volunteered at the Red Cross Blood Drive and was an election precinct worker. She also enjoyed fishing and family gatherings at Topsail Beach.

Perhaps it was one of her granddaughters, Christine Johnson, who summed her up best: “On Sunday afternoon, I said goodbye to my grandmother. She passed away peacefully at 99, in the home that her husband built for her in Duke Park. Ruby Brown was a force. She made and accepted no excuses for herself or anyone else. She loved dancing, the beach, and cooking with her family. She valued hard work, meaningful conversation and honesty. She said exactly what was on her mind and always stood up for what she believed in. I treasure all the memories I have with Nonnie, she was an incredibly proud, strong woman filled with kindness, compassion, love and empathy”

The family would like to thank her wonderful caregivers, Daisy Thomas, Phyllis Burrell and Janella Wilson. We are also extremely grateful to Ruby’s niece, Joan Luquire, who gave her so much love and care as well as her daughter-in-law, Signe, and granddaughter Christine.
Ruby would have been 100 years old in 5 months. She lived a long, rich and fulfilling life and will be missed.

Mrs. Brown’s remains will be cremated and interred at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

I will forever remember the times with Ruby. We would talk and laugh for an hour or more in her little parlor room. In the later years it was more difficult to get her to laugh, but I almost always did. She even laughed for me during those last few weeks. It was my pleasure to be her pastor for eleven years at St. Paul. She will truly be remembered by all. I give thanks for her generosity to the church for many years. Thanks Braxton for call me during her last few weeks.

Dear Ruby Brown Family,
I am so sorry for your lost and had kinda lost touch with Ruby after our Durham Exchangette Club disbanded but she was a precious lady and I loved her as she showed much love to me. My prayer for you all is that God will give you peace and understanding today and days ahead. Just hold onto your memories as it does help to get thru thru the days ahead.

It was with great sadness that I read of Ruby’s death. She was such a dear lady, so full of exuberance and will a special sassy charm. All those years I had the joy of taking her to Exchangette meetings and sharing wonderful conversation along the way. She always terrified me as into her 90’s she came tripping down her steps in her high heel shoes to get into my car, and refusing to hold the hand rail. Always–“I don’t need it.” When I learned she could no longer read my notes, and couldn’t hear me on the phone, I so missed our visits, as my wheelchair couldn’t negotiate her steps. Heaven is a much happier place with her presence. Enjoy your memories as I shall, and know she brought joy to so many lives, and will truly be missed. Love and peace to you all.

My heart goes out to all the family. I remember talking with her and Signe in the grocery store on several occasions. It was Charlie Brown who first came to my house on Gregson St to look at a radiator. My first comment to him was, you got here fast!! He said “I was raised in this house”..

My thoughts and prayers are with you and may you cherish your fond memories..
