Richard Todd “Rick” McLean passed unexpectedly at his home on September 19, 2016 at the age of 52.
Richard Todd “Rick” McLean was born on August 6, 1964 in Durham, North Carolina to Charles Alexander McLean, Sr. and Shirley Mae “Harward” McLean. Rick loved his city and loved being a part of his community. Rick graduated from Durham High and was a multi-sport athlete throughout his youth and high school career. He was an active youth member of Temple Baptist Church, a member of the Durham Boys’ Choir, rode with the Hi Riders Motorcycle club and was an avid Duke fan. Rick worked as a Healthcare Technician and EMT at John Umstead Hospital for 20 years, but many will always remember him as Santa Rick. For over 35 years, Santa Rick brought the joy of Christmas to young and old in the Durham community and beyond. Rick brought a big personality, great sense of humor and a genuine spirit to everything he did. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.
Rick is survived by his wife of almost 24 years, Janet; his sons, Byron and DeShaun and daughter-in-law, Labertta and their four children, Antonio, Michael, Ethan and Jacob who helped Rick to realize his longstanding dream to be known as “PeePaw”; brother, Charles McLean, Jr., several nieces and nephews, and his beloved cats, Peanut Butter and Jingle Belle.
Family will receive friends at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Durham, NC on Friday, September 23, 2016 from 6-8 pm. A funeral service will be held to honor Rick’s life at Temple Baptist Church in Durham on September 24, 2016 at 2 pm. The committal of burial will follow the service at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham.

I wanted to send my condolence to your family, I worked for a very short time with his son, Byron at Edison Johnson Aquatic Center. In that short time, Byron spoke highly of his father and really cared for him.

I just want Byron to know that I am thinking of him and I cannot imagine what he and his family are all going through. I hope Byron will stay positive, upbeat, and continue to keep his great sense of humor for years to come. I did not know Rick, personally, but through Byron… I believe I did. If Byron is anything like his father, then Rick must have been a wonderful man.

Stay strong and know that you are thought of.

Condolence from Kathy Gentry-Taylor on September 23rd, 2016 8:31 pm

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Rick. He was not only my brother’s best friend & brother, he was our brother as well and Uncle Rick/Santa to all of our children. He will be sorely missed. Even though our family circle has been broken we take comfort knowing that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. We know that our brother is not only rejoicing with his mom and dad but with our dad as well who loved Rick as his own. RIP brother, a rest well deserved. Love, your sister Lola

Condolence from David Dickson Jr. on September 23rd, 2016 10:01 pm

I was told of Ricky’s passing just this evening by our former Choir Director when we were children, Bill Graham. I was terribly saddened to hear of his untimely death but was not at all surprised to hear all of the wonderful things he has done since our days as kids during those special years in the choir. He was always one of the most popular, friendly and outgoing people I ever knew and I was fortunate to have been a part of his life in our much earlier years. His mother Shirley was also a special person to me as she adored Ricky also. To his wife and children I send my love and deepest condolences. May your memories of this wonderful person serve you in the many years ahead.
