In Memorial

Richard Ihly ,78,died Sunday Feb 8 in Pittsboro NC.

He was a lifelong lover and respecter of the natural world and was happiest when around water. He shared his love of nature with his family and friends and taught many children to fish and water ski. He led by example and was a role model for those who knew him.

He was born in Beaufort SC, the son of Wilbur and Eleanor Ihly and brother of Claude Ihly, all late of Beaufort.

He was a graduate of the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD . Soon after graduating he married Sandra Harrison. He became a Navy pilot and flew a P2V during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

He joined IBM and with wife Sandra, son Kurt and daughter Kim moved to Raleigh NC.

He retired early to” follow his bliss” and moved to Wilmington where he and Sandra enjoyed sailing, moonlight kayaking and watching the dolphins pass by.

He was most proud of his children: son, Kurt Ihly and wife Lisa and granddaughter, Kaitlyn and grandson Lake of Raleigh, and daughter, Kim LaFreniere and husband Lyman of Yanceyville, and grandson, Bo and wife Jen Ramsay and granddaughter Trisha McAvoy.

As dementia began to steal him from us, he and Sandra moved to Fearrington Village to be closer to family where he traded dolphins for passing deer and changing leaves.  He will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at The Gathering Place, Fearrington Village on Sunday, February 15 at 2 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Protection Society of Caswell County, PO BOX 193, Yanceyville, NC 27379.

Hall-Wynne Griffin Chapel is serving the Ihly family.

So wonderful to hear from old friends. Where are you now?

Condolence from Jeanne Bua on February 10th, 2015 10:07 am

I was saddened to find out that Dick had passed away. Although both of you were in my life briefly, the memory of your pleasant dispositions and Dick’s awesome pickelball backhand will remain with me forever. Thinking of you during the trying times ahead. Jeanne Bua

Condolence from Jack and Norma Duncan, Beaufort, SC on February 10th, 2015 12:11 pm

Please accept our sincere sympathy. Richard was in the class at Beaufort High School one year behind my husband Jack and he was also two years behind me at Beaufort High School. We talked last night of the fond memories we had of Richard. He and Jack played football together. He was a great football player and was so well liked and respected by all his peers in school. We spoke to some of his classmates after reading of his passing and they too remembered him as a big guy at school who always had a smile he shared with fellow classmates. I am sure each of you will miss him but with wonderful memories of him you will always carrying him with you in your heart. May God bless each of you as only he can do..
Sincerely, Jack and Norma Duncan Beaufort, South Carolina

Condolence from Diann Watson Wilkinson on February 10th, 2015 5:23 pm

I was sad to read Richard’s obit in The Island Packet (Hilton Head Is. SC) this morning. Whoever wrote it
is blessed with the soul of a poet. The last time I remember seeing Richard was when we were children. My mother (Moran Watson Weiland) took us out to Gray’s Hill I believe it was, where the Ihlys lived. They were making cane syrup and the wheel kept turning. . .we played jacks on a wooden floor in the house when not running around the property. We had the grandest time and the syrup was like nectar.
I’ve never forgotten that day although Richard and I went on to live different lives in different places. We were so proud when we heard that he’d gone to the Naval Academy. He was smart and he was handsome.
Now he has really found his bliss. May God bless his family.

Condolence from Kathy & Tom Lubbers on February 11th, 2015 12:05 pm

We were saddened to hear of Dick’s death. Just wanted to let you know we’re thinking of you. We have such fun memories with you all. Especially our moonlight canoe trips to Masonboro; getting lost in the marsh, Tom falling out of the canoe, Easter egg hunting on the island in the dark, tennis. We had some great times. Hope with time your pain will ease. I know it’s been a tough few years, but you guys had so many wonderful adventures together and so have many wonderful memories!!! Our hearts go out to you and you are in our prayers.

Condolence from Vicki and Wil Knowles on February 11th, 2015 1:01 pm

We loved spending hours with you and Dick in our kayaks and at the many social events at Tangle Oaks. Thanks for teaching us how to get to Masonboro Island in sunshine or rain and how to find our way back through the reeds, moon or no moon. You and Dick spent every minute absorbing the beauty and reflecting your reverence for it. You’d be the first ones in your kayaks after a storm at the crack of dawn to comb the Island for newly arrived shells. You two are still our role models for lives well lived. Thank you for sharing so much of your time and wisdom with us. We will miss Dick but know his spirit lives on in the wind and waves.
Much love,
Vicki and Wil Knowles

Dearest cousins,

Rick and I are so sad for you and certainly sad to have lost my oldest cousin. Daddy adored Richard and all his nieces and nephews. They were all very special to him. I always looked up to Richard as the most handsome and the most intelligent of all my cousins. He was very special and a very caring person. He will be missed.

All our love,
Rick & Terri Ihly Morgan
