Wilma Waye Shook

Dec 27, 1936 — Jul 17, 2026

Hillsborough, NC

Wilma Shook finished her testimony here on earth and entered into Heaven's Gates on July 17th, 2026 at the age of 89. Wilma was born in Lewiston, Maine - precious daughter to Preston Waye (deceased) and Ruth (Eldred Small) both deceased; also deceased by her beloved and treasured sister Trudie Garey and brother-in-law Wesley Garey, brothers Robert Waye and Milford Waye. Wilma is survived by two wonderful brothers Dee Small and Michael Waye (Sue). Wilma is also survived by her two beloved daughters (who were her caregivers the past several years) Kathy Horner and husband Todd, and Debbie Miller and husband Ryan, her two special grandboys Thomas Glenn Horner & wife Jozelyn and Cole Ryan Miller & wife Madison; as well as many wonderful nieces & nephews. Wilma is also survived by another beloved daughter, Kerry Niering.

Wilma enlisted in the United States Army after she graduated from High School in 1955 and was part of the Company A - WAC Training Battalion at Fort McClellan Alabama. While enlisted from 1956-1959 she traveled to Germany, Holland and Scotland and worked at the Army Hospitals overseas. Wilma met the love of her life, Coleman, in Connecticut in 1965 and they married and moved to North Carolina. Wilma retired from the Durham VA Medical Center in 1997 after 27 years of employment where she was recognized numerous times for her outstanding work ethic.

Wilma was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church in Efland where she served as the church secretary for over 45 years. She was also faithful in attendance with her daughters at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church and Broad Creek Methodist Church.

Wilma had a heart of gold. It was mentioned in her high school yearbook that she was "reserved but always ready to help others". Wilma loved to take photos of flowers, sunsets, animals and of her family. She wrote poems for those that she loved and sent out cards regularly even with her diminished eyesight. Wilma was a woman of faith. She was a prayer warrior, and she prayed for everyone she knew. She prayed for her friends, her family, her girls, her special grandboys and faithfully prayed for her husband Coleman for 41 years and led him to Christ the day before he passed from this side of eternity in 2007. Now they are reunited again in Heaven.

The family wishes to honor Wilma with a Celebration of her Life at Faith Baptist Church, 5100 W Ten Road, Efland, NC, on Friday, July 24th 2026 with Visitation from 10:00 - 10:45; Service at 11:00 and graveside/committal service following. Wilma would ask you in her final words that if you don’t know Jesus as your Savior, that you would invite him into your heart, seek and serve Him before it is too late.
