DURHAM - Virginia “Ginny” Hake Widmark, 77, passed away peacefully at home on April 18th in Durham, North Carolina, at Atria at Southpoint Walk, after a long and courageous battle with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP).
Ginny was born on July 3, 1948, in Little Falls, Minnesota, to Richard and Dorothy Hake. She grew up alongside her siblings, Connie Zobel (married to John Zobel), Steve Hake (widower after losing wife Faye Hake), Margie Sargent (married to John Sargent), and Cath Howard (married to Michael Howard), forming lifelong bonds rooted in love, laughter, and resilience. The five siblings made time to be together every year and were all at her side in the end.
Ginny was a devoted wife for 44-years of marriage with her husband, Andrew Widmark, until his passing in 2023. Together, they built a full life centered around family, adventure and service to others.
She was a dedicated and proud mother who raised three strong daughters: Leann Jocius (married to Gavin), Sara Widmark, and Rachel Buchanan (married to Rob). Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren—Lyra and Jett Jocius and Nellie Loeblein. Through a lifelong relationship with her two stepdaughters, Christina Widmark and Katherine Markowitz, Ginny counted seven additional grandchildren—as well as five great-grandchildren–in her beloved family.
Ginny lived a vibrant and active life. She found joy in long walks, tennis matches, and yoga, and she loved gathering with friends to play games and share laughter. An avid reader, she was always eager to learn and grow. She gave generously of her time, mentoring and tutoring children and making a lasting impact on many young lives.
Her friendships were a cornerstone of her life. She treasured her time with her “DA moms,” the Women of First Presbyterian Church, her college roommate Joan Diaz, and the many dear friends she made at Atria. Ginny had a gift for connection—she made people feel seen, valued, and welcomed wherever she went.
Ginny will be remembered for her strength, kindness, generosity, and deep love for her family and community. Her presence brought warmth and steadiness to those around her, and her legacy will live on in the lives she touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Cure PSP in honor of Ginny.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 1 at 1:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church in Durham, followed by a celebration of life from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at the Refectory Café.
