Theodore “Terry” Nick Bakatsias, 80, of Pittsboro, North Carolina, passed away on August 31, 2026. Theodore was born and raised in Karitsa, Greece. He later made his home in the United States, building a life defined by hard work, resilience, and, above all, devotion to his family.
From 1967 to 1969, Theodore proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal with “V” device for heroism in combat, recognizing his extraordinary courage and bravery under enemy fire.
Theodore was a graduate of Elon University and spent his career in the restaurant industry, where he worked throughout his life. Away from work, he could often be found watching Duke basketball, enjoying a round of golf, or simply spending time with the people who mattered most to him. Of all the things he enjoyed in life, his family was always at the center.
Theodore shared 42 years of marriage with his wife, Soula (“Red”), and was the proud father of three daughters, Penny, Dina (husband, Madison), and Nicole (husband, Josh). He was also a loving grandfather to Hendrix and Mila, who brought tremendous joy to his life.
He is survived by his wife, Soula; his daughters, Penny, Dina, and Nicole; his grandchildren, Hendrix and Mila; his brothers, Johnny and Giorgios; and his sister, Olga.
From his childhood in a small village in Greece, to his service in Vietnam, to the family and life he built in North Carolina, Theodore’s 80 years were marked by courage, perseverance, hard work, and love. His dry sense of humor and silent wisdom kept his family on their toes. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who knew and loved him.
The funeral liturgy will be at 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 5, at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Barbara in Durham. Friends will be received from 2:00 - 3:00 PM before the funeral, during which the Trisagion litany will be offered. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, Section 16.
Contributions may be made to the Purple Heart Foundation or St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in memory of Theodore Nick Bakatsias. Arrangements are under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
