DURHAM, NC — Sophia "Sophie" Marie Kane, age 21, passed away on August 26, 2026, at Duke Children’s Hospital due to complications from pneumonia.

Born on July 4, 2005, Sophie brought light into the lives of her parents, Royston and Glenis Kane, and her sister, Sarah. She grew up surrounding herself with music, movies, and adventures with her family. Her musical taste ranged from Phish, Goose, and Frank Zappa to Harry Styles and Taylor Swift. A dedicated concertgoer, she especially loved seeing Phish (5 times), Goose (3 times), and anything featuring Ross Lynch (R5 and Driver Era). Her absolute favorite movie to watch was The Princess and the Frog, but she was equally a massive Star Wars fan and loved tuning into the Disney Channel, Curious George, (as evidenced in her love for monkeys) Pingu, and Barney (which she showed her love for through Sissy).

Throughout her life, Sophie attended several vibrant school communities, including Meeting Street School in Providence, Rhode Island, as well as Meadowbrook Farms, Frenchtown, and Hanaford schools in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. After moving to North Carolina, she attended Lead Mine and Cedar Fork Elementary schools, and Seaforth High School.

Sophie, an angel on Earth, possessed a rare and beautiful gift. She had the ability to bring light, warmth, and joy into every room she entered. Her presence had a profound impact on people, making them feel seen, loved, and understood. Sophie inspired us all to love deeply, laugh often, find joy in the little things, and face life with courage and an open heart.

Sophie’s strength was extraordinary. She carried herself with grace and determination through every challenge, inspiring, through faith, everyone around her. Yet perhaps one of her greatest gifts was the way she brought people together. Sophie, with her unwavering strength and indomitable spirit, forged a robust and devoted community of supporters across North Carolina and Rhode Island. Friends, neighbors, teachers, caregivers(especially at the Duke Hospital ICU who cared for her during her final month), and countless others were drawn to her—not only because of the remarkable person she was, but because of the hope, courage, and connection she inspired in everyone around her. She forged a strong spiritual community united by love, compassion, and an unwavering belief in her.

Though her time with us was far too short, Sophie’s impact was anything but fleeting. She left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her love, laughter, strength, and the community she fostered will continue to live on through the many lives she touched.

Sophie is survived by her loving parents, Royston and Glenis Kane, and her sister, Sarah Kane. She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Oscar Dias and Samuel "Eric" Kane.

She leaves behind an extended, loving family:

  • Grandmothers: Loretta Dias and Fatima Kane
  • Aunts & Uncles: Esmond Kane, Kim Kane, Priscilla Kurien (and the late Thomas Kurien), Brian Lancelot, Melissa Lancelot, Mathew Dias, and Angelina Dias
  • Cousins: Kathleen, Lexi (Brandon), Keagan, Ben, Melanie, Reanne, Justin, and Ronnel

Sophie will be deeply and sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
