Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Oriana Lattes Deik, a beloved resident of Chapel Hill, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on August 13, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on November 2, 1938, in Quillota, Chile, Oriana was the cherished daughter of the late Ines Deik Lamas and Carlos Lattes Miranda.

Oriana's life was marked by a profound dedication to education and the arts. She graduated from high school in 1958 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Universidad de Chile. Her thirst for knowledge led her to further her studies in Krefeld, Germany, from 1963 to 1964. Oriana later achieved a Master of Education degree from Clemson University in 1974, reflecting her commitment to lifelong learning.

Beyond her academic and professional achievements, Oriana was an avid athlete with a deep love for the mountains and skiing. She was a passionate tennis player and maintained an active lifestyle, walking numerous miles daily until her illness. Oriana was also an enthusiastic reader, amassing a vast collection of thousands of books that reflected her diverse interests and intellectual curiosity.

A true polyglot, Oriana was proficient in English, Spanish, French, and German, both written and spoken. Her artistic talents spanned various mediums, leaving an indelible mark on the world and those who knew her.

Oriana is survived by her devoted husband, Clemente Mendoza Vergara; sister Virginia Lattes Deik, brother German Lattes Deik, and her loving son, Sergio Mendoza Lattes; her daughter-in-law, Sandra Bruno; and her cherished granddaughters, Sofia, Consuelo, and Constanza. Her family and friends will forever remember her as a beacon of wisdom, creativity, and love.

In honoring Oriana's life, her family invites those who knew her to celebrate her legacy and the joy she brought to those around her. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
