Nancy Anne McCaig (born Annie Oley Scott) passed away in Cary, NC on June 29, 2025, aged 96. She was born on August 23, 1928 to the late Henry Carter and Frances (Bell) Scott in Durham, England.
Nancy grew up in Lanchester and Birmingham, England until the age of 8, when she was sent to Canada in 1936 as a child migrant. She attended Fairbridge Farm School in Cowichan, British Columbia. She was joined at Fairbridge a few years later by her half-brother Eric Newark Foster. After graduating, Nancy worked as a switchboard operator at the British Columbia Telephone Company, until she met her future husband, George Fredrick (Fred) McCaig while roller-skating. Nancy married Fred in 1949, and together they had five children, Frederick Duncan (Duncan), Gerald (Gerry) Scott, Byron George, Cameron Stuart and Bonnie Carolyn. Nancy and Fred were happily married for 56 years until Fred’s death in 2005.
Nancy enjoyed baking, sewing, knitting, making preserves and gardening. She was a member of the Daughters of the British Empire and a long-time supporter of the American Humane Society. She maintained a number of strong friendships throughout her life, regardless of time and distance. Later in life she reconnected with family members in England, visiting her sisters, nieces and nephews.
Nancy is survived by her sons, Duncan and Cameron McCaig and daughter Bonnie Carolyn McCaig, as well as grandson Dillon McCaig and granddaughters Jessica McCaig and Heather McCaig. She was pre-deceased by her husband Fred, sons Gerald and Byron, brother Joseph Scott, sister Mary (Scott) Stott, sister Iris (Scott) Pyle, half-sister May (Foster) Robson, half-brother Eric N. Foster and half-brother Brian Foster.
Nancy McCaig will be interred at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens in Nanaimo, British Columbia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nancy’s name to the American Humane Society. The McCaig family is under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
