DURHAM, NC – Michael Daniel “Dan” Litton, age 81, passed away at home on the morning of May 29, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Gastonia, NC, on October 8, 1944, Dan grew up in his hometown before heading off to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His studies were interrupted when he was drafted, and he proudly stepped away to serve his country honorably in the United States Army. Following his service, he finished his education, earning his degree from UNC. Dan went on to build a dedicated and successful career in computer systems, spending more than three decades working for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dan was an avid tennis player who found his greatest joy on the court, especially when playing alongside his beloved children and grandchildren. He loved going on adventures, visiting relatives, and taking relaxing trips to the beach with his family—where he could always be counted on to haul all the toys, chairs, and umbrellas down to the sand to secure the absolute perfect spot. A die-hard Tar Heel, Dan never missed an opportunity to watch a Carolina sporting event, a loyal passion that brought him joy right up until his final days.
Dan’s legacy of love lives on through his devoted wife of 54 years, Jean Litton; his two sons, Daniel Litton and his wife Katie, and Michael Litton and his wife Gina; his adored grandchildren, Sarah and Kristopher Litton; his special aunt, Jeanne Rawlings; and many other loving family members and dear friends.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00PM on Thursday, June 4th, 2026 at St. Matthew’s Catholic Cemetery, 1001 Mason Road, Durham, NC.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Camp Morris (a camp for children who have diabetes) and Duke Cancer Institute - Hematologic Malignancies & Cellular Therapy.
