In Loving Memory of Meghan Sawyers

Meghan Sawyers, 39, of Alpena, Michigan, passed away on October 29, 2026, after a short but valiant fight with cancer. She was born on September 11, 1987, to Robert (Bob) Smith and her late mother, Jane Fochtman-Smith.

Meghan was a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished daughter and sister, and a compassionate healthcare professional. As a physician assistant, she served patients in the neurocritical care units at both the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville and Duke University Hospital in Durham. She dedicated her career to caring for others and made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless patients and their families.

Meghan earned her physician assistant degree at Lincoln Memorial University. Her time there was about much more than studies; it was where she formed friendships that would last a lifetime. During the program, she met two of her lifelong friends, Erica Grace and Lauren Shaw, and, most importantly, the man who would become her husband, Cody. The friendships and love that began during those years became some of the most meaningful relationships of her life, making her time at Lincoln Memorial an especially important chapter in her story.

Above all else, Meghan treasured her family. Her greatest joy was being a mother to her two beautiful daughters, Madelynn Sawyers, age 3, and Savannah Sawyers, age 2. She loved making memories with her girls and Cody. Family adventures were among her favorite things: trips to the beach, exercising, trying new foods, and discovering the best coffee shops wherever they went. Whether traveling somewhere new or simply enjoying the everyday moments together, Meghan found happiness in making memories with the people she loved most.

Meghan shared a special bond with her twin brother, Matt Smith. Their connection was unique and an important part of who she was. She also deeply loved her father, Bob Smith, and her older brother, Jordan Smith.

Although Meghan’s life ended far too soon, the love she gave, the lives she touched, and the memories she created will never fade. Her daughters will grow up surrounded by the stories, photographs, and countless reminders of a mother whose love for them was immeasurable.

Meghan will be forever loved, deeply missed, and never forgotten by anyone fortunate enough to have known her. Her legacy will live on through her family and the many lives she touched throughout her 39 years.
