Mattie Sue Speed Cash, born and raised in Granville County, passed away at the age of 92 on August 18, 2023, at Universal Healthcare. She was the daughter of William Talmadge Speed and Clara Breedlove Speed. Mattie Sue graduated from Oxford High School in 1949 and went on to work at various places including Roses 5 & 10, Hillman Currins Esso, Claude C. Wheeler, Louise and John Morgan Royster, ASCS, and alongside her husband at O.H. Cash Grocery.
Her devotion to her faith, family, and community was evident throughout her life. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church and was actively engaged in various church activities. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels at the Granville Senior Center, was part of the Mary Jamison Women's Club, J.A.M, and served as a Sunday school teacher for over 50 years. She was also a choir member at Enon Baptist Church and played the role of a historian for Enon's Scrapbook.
Mattie Sue Speed Cash was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver "Baby" Howell Cash, Sr., her brother Clyde William Speed, and her parents. She is survived by her son, Howell Cash, Jr., and his wife Angela, as well as her granddaughters Heather Weaver (married to Linwood) and Lauren Gooch (married to Jason). She also leaves behind numerous friends and extended family members.
The funeral services will be held on August 21, 2023, at 11:00 am at Enon Baptist Church in Oxford, NC. The services will be officiated by Rev. Steve Brown. Following the service, a visitation period with a simple luncheon provided by the Ladies of the Church. The burial will take place at 1:30 pm on the same day at Elmwood Cemetery.
Flowers are welcomed or the family requested that memorials be made to Enon Baptist Church.
