Chapel Hill, NC – Mary Alice D. Eubanks passed away peacefully surrounded by her doting family on Monday, May 13th at the age of 101. She was born in Durham at Watts Hospital on December 28, 1922, to the late John Milton Duhling and the late Mary Ward Duhling.
Mary Alice attended Durham High School and graduated in 1940. She was well loved by her fellow classmates and was quite the overachiever at an early age. Her senior year she was homeroom president, a member of the student council, and involved in countless clubs including commercial club, O. Henry literary society, junior needlework guild, yearbook staff, swimming club, life-saving club, monogram club, girl’s athletic association and school secretary. She was honored to attend her 55th high school reunion in 1995.
Mary Alice was a devoted member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Durham where she served as Treasurer for more than 30 years. After the birth of her three children, she started working at Duke University, where she was manager of the Insurance billing department from 1958-1984. After retirement, she devoted the rest of her life to helping raise her granddaughters.
A beloved pilar of her church and community, Mary Alice was a gentle soul. A very simple woman with so much love to give. She was adored and idolized by her friends, family, and especially by her granddaughters who cherished her ever so dearly.
Surviving are her sons William Ruie Eubanks (wife Elizabeth Jones Eubanks) of Fletcher, NC, Joseph Milton Eubanks (wife Elizabeth Bittle Eubanks) of Durham, NC, and her son-in-law Rodney Michael Long of Cary, NC. Her six granddaughters; Amanda Wallace, Katherine Demetris, Corie Latta, Camilla Irish, Macey Englebright, and Elizabeth Bullard, and nine great-grandchildren. Mary Alice is preceded in death by her parents, her brother John Milton Duhling, and her daughter Mary Anne Long.
There will be a graveside service at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery on Friday, May 17th, 2024 at 10:00 AM. 1721 Legion Rd. Chapel Hill, NC 27517.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in honor of Mary Alice D. Eubanks, to the Mary Anne Long Patient and Family Resource Center which is located in the UNC Lineberger Cancer Hospital. https://give.unc.edu/gift/euba
