(Durham) – (Lula Mae Stewart), age 95, died in Durham, NC on April 12th, 2026. Lula Mae McNair was born in Lumberton NC to Eddy and Lula McNair on July 16th 1930. She grew up in North Carolina and eventually moved to Durham, NC where she played basketball at Hillside HS, graduated and eventually went on to meet the love of her life Vaughn H. Stewart. In her early twenties Lula played Semi-Professional basketball in her local area showing a great level of skill and knowledge for the game that later found her taking on a head coaching position for a local team in Cleveland Ohio. She led that team to a city championship in her first year. Lula had a knack for making friends and charming individuals that came into her sphere. Something that was a gift all the way up to her final curtain call. Dynamic, outspoken, thoughtful and loving. The Love of her life Vaughn H. passed away in 1990 and she has survived this time knowing that someday she would be reunited with her husband. She leaves behind an only son Vaughn M. Stewart and a grand daughter London Ashley Stewart, along with Grand sons’ Paris Stewart and Noah Stewart, and great grandsons Mal, Ronan, and Han. Loved by many.
Lula was a Semi Pro Basket Ball Player, Professional Bowler, Professional Caterer, Travel enthusiast.
Ms. Lula’s remains will be sent to Okinawa Japan, where her son will provide a final resting spot at the family memorial in the Land Of The Rising Sun. The (Stewart) family is under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service. Online
