Durham, NC – Karla Brodie Greene, age 65, passed peacefully at Duke University Medical Center on July 1, 2026 surrounded by love and her family. She was born on February 23, 1961 in Washington, DC to the late William P. and Eleanor B. Brodie.
Karla lived a full and active life. She graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy and from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Master of Science in Physical Therapy. She had a fulfilling 40-year career as a Physical Therapist working in a variety of clinical settings including hospital, home health, acute neurorehabilitation, and most recently in Duke’s Outpatient Cardio/Pulmonary Rehabilitation Clinic.
Karla loved to travel and ventured to England, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. Her favorite trip was the last one she took with Jeff to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. The beach was her happy place. She looked forward to the annual family beach vacation and did not miss a single trip for 32 straight years.
She was an avid athlete who enjoyed cycling and working out at the gym. She completed multiple athletic feats in her life including a 20K bike in the Transplant Olympics after her first kidney transplant, a 1500m open water swim in her 50s, and multiple 5Ks - including frigid Turkey Trots. Her favorite hobby was anything involving her children. Gymnastics, diving, soccer, cross country running, marching band, jazz band, piano lessons, musical theater, choir, lacrosse – wherever her children were, she could be found cheering them on and lending a helping hand. Nothing, however, could top her skill at baking creative cakes for special occasions.
Karla overcame many obstacles in life including two kidney transplants, hip and shoulder replacements, and multiple other orthopedic injuries and surgeries. She handled them all with grace and determination and never let those things keep her from being there for her family and friends. She was always thinking about other people and what they might need.
The most important thing in Karla’s life was her family. She is survived by her devoted husband Jeff; their children, Sarah (Mike) Moserowitz, Aria Greene, and Daniel (Luz Andrea) Greene; her cherished grandsons Eli and Maxwell Moserowitz; sister Bethe Brodie and brothers Mark (Jennifer) and Jeff (Shelly) Brodie. Karla was preceded in death by her parents William and Eleanor Brodie.
