John F. Wily III passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, leaving a legacy of warmth, generosity, and unwavering optimism. A devoted father, loyal friend, and proud Tarheel, John will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Born on April 26, 1938, John was the beloved son of the late Hazel L. Wily and John F. Wily Jr., founding members of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Martha T. Wily; his son, Thomas Wily; and his brother, Link Wily.
John spent over 50 years as an insurance agent and financial advisor with Equitable, specializing in life insurance, annuities, and long-term care. His dedication to his clients earned him countless accolades for service and sales, but more than that, John was driven by a deep desire to help others. Even as his memory faded in later years, his commitment to “write the contract” remained—a touching reminder of his passion for his life’s work.
An avid golfer, John served as a marshal at the Masters Tournament in Augusta for 25 years, spending his final years on the iconic 18th hole. He combined his love for golf and service by supporting Special Olympics of North Carolina as a volunteer golf coach and dedicated fundraiser.
John was a lifelong learner and was an active member of Toastmasters, always eager to refine his speaking and connect with others. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he remained a devoted member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where his children were baptized and confirmed.
John’s kindness, gratitude, and charm endured through every stage of his life. He adored his children and grandchildren. He was an enthusiastic supporter through triumphs and challenges, definitely sharing his polite Southern wisdom, and encouraging positive self-talk. Even in his final years, dependent on others for all care, John’s caregivers noted his sweet, polite, and thankful nature.
He is survived by many who cherished him: his daughter, Marcie Wily (John Helleberg), and grandchildren Sophie and Jack; his sister, Margaret Noisworthy (Pat); his late son Thomas' children, Jake and Jacqueline Wily, and Flemming Sanders; nephew Fleming Wily; cousin Beth Day (Travis, Collin, Keenan); cousin Kinsey Wily; and a host of extended family and dear friends. A special thanks goes to Esther Amos, who lovingly cared for both John and Martha in their later years.
A memorial service will be held at a later date so that all can gather. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to the Special Olympics of North Carolina (Golf Program) or Westminster Presbyterian Church.
John lived with gratitude, dignity, and an open heart. His life was a gift to all who knew him.
