Jane Lee Jannelli (nee’ Murray), our Nanna, was born in New York City (1939) and passed away peacefully, at home surrounded by her family in Chapel Hill, NC (2024). She was the first of three children born to her loving parents, James and Catherine Murray. She helped look after her younger siblings, Sue and Jimmy, whom she loved deeply.
Her early years were marked by a family move to Long Island, where she had many fond memories of family visits. She enjoyed playing with all her cousins, developing a bond that she cherished throughout her life.
As she grew, so did her Catholic faith and love of learning. After graduating college, these two passions led her to leave the comforts of home and head to Uganda to teach. There she met her late husband, Armando, and had two children: Mary and Vince. As life in Uganda became tumultuous, the family was forced to leave the country, ultimately settling in Italy.
There, she learned Italian, raised her family, and furthered her love of history; as well as developed a passion for Italian soccer. Zia Jane, as she was known by her Italian family, chose to remain in her beloved Italy well after her husband’s passing. She eventually moved to Chapel Hill to be close to her grandchildren: Ryan, Isabella, and Marco.
She is survived by her beloved grandchildren, her daughter Mary (Bob), her son Vince (Ellie), her sister Sue (Henry), and brother Jimmy (Patti).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jane and Armando URECA or UNC Hospice.
