Jane Garci-Gomez

Durham, North Carolina – Jane Hazel Waehrens Garci-Gomez, 80, died at her home in Durham on October 10, 2025. She was born in 1945 in Bindslev, Denmark to the late Betty (Kirkegaard) and Erik Waehrens.

Jane moved to the United States in 1968 to work as a nurse in Washington, D.C., where she met her husband, Miguel Garci-Gomez. They lived in Maryland and Pennsylvania before settling in Durham in 1973. Jane worked as a nurse in Duke Hospital and the Duke student infirmary before retiring in the 1990s. She was a loving mother, nurse, and caregiver. She enjoyed taking walks and chatting withneighbors in the neighborhood where she lived for over 40 years. Jane also enjoyed knitting and Danish cross-stitch. She formed a special bond in her lateryears with her son Michael’s dog Graci, who brought her daily joy.

Jane is survived by her children Erik Garci, Maria Garci Juenger, and Michael Garci, and grandchildren Nolan, Nina and Maya Garci and Benjamin and Cecilia Juenger. Jane was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother, Ib Waehrens.
