James Gwyn Moseley

James G. Moseley (Jay) was born March 24, 1946 and passed away peacefully of natural causes on September 2, 2026 in Durham, North Carolina. He was born in Atlanta, GA to James Gwyn Moseley, Sr and Frances Wilson Moseley.

Jay was a 1968 graduate of Stanford University and continued his education at the University of Chicago, where he earned his MA and PhD degrees in Theology and Literature. He held academic and administrative positions at New College of Florida, at Chapman University, and at Transylvania University (Lexington, KY) where he served as Vice-President, Dean of the College, and Professor of Religion from 1991 until 2002. In 2002 he accepted the position of President of Franklin College in Indiana, and he served in that role until his retirement from Franklin College in 2015. In 2023 Franklin College awarded him the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.

Publications by James G. Moseley include “John Winthrop’s World” and “A Cultural History of Religion in America” as well as numerous articles and book reviews.

Jay was pre-deceased by his parents and by his sister, Reverend Carol Moseley Ames. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Candace, and by his children Emily Ann Moseley, JD (Robert Esther, MD) and James B. Moseley, PhD (Lindsay Moseley) and by his grandchildren James (Ben) Esther, Mary Jane Esther, Katharine Moseley, and James W. Moseley.

A private service and burial will be at a later date for immediate family.
