In Loving Memory

of

Geraldine Steffen Rayford

Geraldine Steffen Rayford, known affectionately as Geri, gracefully concluded her earthly journey on December 7, 2023; surrounded by the love and warmth she freely shared throughout her life. Born on April 29, 1946, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Geri was the cherished daughter of the late John Victor Steffen and Catherine Segla Steffen.

Geri's educational journey was blazed with passion and dedication. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Kindergarten-Primary Education from Trenton State College in 1968, and was initiated into Kappa Delta Pi, an Honor Society in Education. In pursuit of excellence, she earned a Master's in Developmental Reading. Her commitment to education extends beyond the classroom, securing certifications as a Teacher of Reading, Reading Specialist, and Language Arts. Trenton State College is where she met the love of her life Edward Rayford, Jr.

For thirty-five years, Geri contributed to the field of education, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless students. She began her career at Seaside Heights Elementary School in Seaside, New Jersey, before becoming a dedicated reading teacher in the Trenton (NJ) public school system. In 1978, alongside her husband, she moved to Durham, North Carolina. She served as a Title I Reading Teacher for the Chapel Hill - Carrboro City School System until her well-deserved retirement in 2003.

Beyond the classroom, Geri's spirit of service extended to St. Philip's Episcopal Church. She volunteered in the office and played a pivotal role in organizing funeral receptions. Her commitment fostered enduring friendships within the church community.

Geri's legacy was filled with devotion and creativity. She lovingly imparted her deep appreciation for reading and showcased exceptional artistic talents in needlework, calligraphy, basketry, drawing, origami, and intricately patterned coloring. Her enthusiasm for teaching and inspiring children will be remembered by those fortunate enough to be touched by her kindness.

Cherished loved ones to uphold her memories are brothers, Thomas Steffen (Judith) of Newcomb, NY and Richard Steffen (Linda) of DeFuniak Springs, FL; Sisters-in law, Annie R. Glascoe, Raleigh, NC and Rachel R. Covington, Durham, NC; several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, cousins, and a host of friends who will continue to hold her memory dear.

A memorial service to celebrate Geri's life will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, Durham, NC, with Reverend Mary Ann D. Younger officiating. Following the committal service, the family will receive guests in the reception hall for friends and loved ones to share cherished memories of a remarkable woman who left an enduring legacy of love, compassion, and wisdom.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to Family Reading Partners, a nonprofit organization near and dear to Geri's heart that brought her immense joy.
