Florence Shackelford, a long-time Durham resident, died peacefully on Tuesday July 3rd at age 94. Florence was well known in the Durham community. She is remembered as the indefatigable working partner of her late husband, photographer Walter Shackelford. She was active in many service clubs, including a sisterhood she cherished called the Red Hens. In the early 70s, she was a member of a ???walking??? group of Eno River preservationists, which grew later to become the Eno River Association. Generations will recall a Sunday greeting from her at First Presbyterian Church where she was a long-time member. Born Florence Veronica Pearce in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Florence spent most of her youth in Milford, Delaware. She and Walter, her husband of 65 years, met on a blind date that was set up by Walter???s sister Agnes Lee, who lived ineearby Harrington, Delaware. After marrying, Florence and Walter settled in Durham and raised their family here. She is survived by: a son, Gene and wife Debbye of Pittsburgh; a daughter, Fran and husband Steve Branch of Fayetteville; a son, Dan and wife Gay of Baltimore; four grandchildren, Wesley and Jordan Branch and Lyndsay and Nolan Shackelford. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, August 3 at First Presbyterian Church. The family will greet friends immediately following the service.
