Dr. Noel Gray Harvey, 66, passed away on April 4, 2026, in the Outer Banks—a place he loved deeply and returned to whenever he could. Born on March 4, 1960, in Winston-Salem, Noel was the first child of Ray E. Harvey and Alice Jean Radel, and later became a devoted big brother to Marcus, who arrived five years later.

Noel’s early years were rooted in community and curiosity. He attended Salem Baptist Day School, where his father served as principal, and grew up a true child of the ’60s and ’70s—spending long summers riding bikes through downtown Kernersville, pulling tobacco for pocket money, fishing at the city lake, and, more often than not, getting spectacularly sunburned.

He discovered a love for storytelling in high school at Kernersville Wesleyan Academy, where he served as editor of the school newspaper. Though he earned a scholarship to Yale University to study literature, Noel made a characteristically heartfelt decision to stay in North Carolina, choosing to remain close to his mother during her illness.

That choice led him toward science—toward things that could be tested, proven, and understood. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a degree in chemistry and went on to pursue his doctorate at Duke University. It was there, in 1984, that he met his future wife, Helen Pak-Harvey. Noel later liked to tell his children that he knew the moment she walked into the room that he would marry her. (Given his fondness for a good story, his children never quite confirmed the details.) They were married in Duke Chapel in 1987.

Following Helen’s first job after graduate school, the couple moved to Pennsylvania, where they welcomed their daughter, Amelia. In 1993, they returned to North Carolina when Noel joined Becton Dickinson as a senior scientist. They settled into an old brick home in Efland—one they lovingly restored with Noel’s father and filled with antiques that told stories of their own. Three years later, their son Ezra was born.

Noel’s love for North Carolina only deepened over the years. He was happiest outdoors—fishing, hunting, and exploring—and he shared that joy often with Ezra across lakes, woods, and coastlines throughout the state. As his career in research and development at B.D. grew, so did the life he and Helen built together: a mountain cabin in Lake Lure, a beach house in the Outer Banks, and later, a home in Las Vegas.

Music was one of Noel’s constant companions. He built a collection of more than 700 records, spanning artists like A Flock of Seagulls, Bob Dylan, and Townes Van Zandt. Classic rock, folk, and ’80s pop filled the Efland home—sometimes loudly—especially during moments like burping baby Ezra over his shoulder with music playing in the background.

After 31 years with B.D., Noel retired in 2025, ready to fully embrace the life he had built. He spent his time moving between the places he loved most and began a new project close to his heart: restoring an old brick home in Indianapolis for his granddaughter, Matilda. He worked on it alongside his son-in-law, Andrew Tullis, filling it—once again—with carefully chosen antiques and meaning.

On April 4, Noel was doing what he loved—fishing off the coast of Ocracoke—when a boating accident took his life unexpectedly. It is a loss that is deeply felt by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Pak-Harvey; his children, Amelia Pak-Harvey and Dr. Ezra Pak-Harvey; his son-in-law, Andrew Tullis; his brother, Marcus Harvey; his sister-in-law, Laura Harvey; his nephews, Adam and Will Harvey; and his beloved granddaughter, Matilda Tullis.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service at 1113 W. Main St., Durham, NC. To celebrate Noel’s life, the family warmly invites all who attend the service to join them afterward for a meal just a few blocks away.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cape Hatteras Food Pantry, a nonprofit in the Outer Banks that the family especially cared about and supported: https://www.hatterasislandmeals.org/foodpantry
