Dr. Josefina Cintron Tiryakian, devoted mother, spouse, remarkable scholar, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, at her home on Pascal Way in Durham, NC. She was 100 years old.
Born on February 2, 1926, Josefina’s life was defined by her passion for education and her dedication to family. She earned degrees from the University of Mary Washington, The Sorbonne in Paris, and a Ph.D. from Harvard College on Latin American Colonialism where her dissertation is housed. Her illustrious career included serving as a Professor of Latin American Studies, the final Dean of Duke University’s Women’s College, and the Director of Duke’s International Studies program. A Fulbright Scholar and accomplished author, she left an indelible mark on academia.
Josefina was married for 72 years to Dr. Edward Tiryakian, with whom she shared a life of love and intellectual partnership until his passing. She is survived by her son, Edmund Tiryakian, his wife Jackie, her son Edwyn Tiryakian, and his wife Karen, who carry forward her legacy.
A vibrant individual beyond her professional achievements, Josefina was an avid bridge player, a Master Gardener, a nutritional guru, and a gourmet chef. Her scholarly pursuits extended to her membership in the American Historical Society and her deep knowledge of Latin American history. She was also a devoted member of Immaculate Conception Parish in Durham.
In February of this year, Josefina celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by friends and family at her home a testament to the full and joyous life she led as a social butterfly who touched countless lives.
Josefina’s memory will forever inspire those who knew her. May she rest in peace with the Lord she so Duke’s International Studies faithfully served.
There will be a viewing at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service; 1113 W. Main St. Durham, NC on Friday, June 5, 2026 from 5-7 pm.
There will be a memorial service at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 810 W. Chapel Hill St;, Durham, NC at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2026.
