Diane Middleton Wilder, 78, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2026. Born on February 22, 1948, in New York City, Diane Wilder lived a life defined by a rare brilliance, an indomitable spirit, and a fierce, unwavering devotion to those she held dear. She was a woman of formidable strength and infectious wit—possessing a mind that was as sharp as her spirit was warm. That signature New York spunk was her trademark, staying with her as a spark of joy and resilience throughout her entire journey.
A proud graduate of Wallace High School (Class of 1965), Diane was a lifelong learner. She earned her Bachelor of Liberal Arts from Charleston Southern University and later a Master’s in Education from the College of Charleston. While she began her career as a compassionate advocate in social work, she soon discovered her true vocation in the classroom. From 1978 onward, Diane dedicated herself to the sacred task of shaping young minds, eventually rising to serve as a distinguished administrator for Montgomery County Schools in Rockville, Maryland. She retired in 2007, leaving a legacy built on leadership, integrity, and an authentic care for the next generation.
Music was the language of Diane’s soul. Blessed with a voice her family aptly described as angelic, she directed her church’s youth choir for years, molding not just voices, but hearts. Outside of her service, she found her "fun" in the rhythm of travel and the excitement of the casino, but her greatest treasures were her "heartbeats"—the children and grandchildren who were the absolute center of her universe.
Diane is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Julius Wilder; her beloved sister, Marsha DeBois (Sam); and her three children Tanisha Wilder (Dora), Erika Emelle (Ryan), and Julius M. Wilder (Rhonda). She also leaves behind six cherished grandchildren: Sydney Wilder-White, Ross Emelle, Aaron Wilder, Jacob Wilder, Bella Wilder, and Juel Sapp. Diane’s wisdom, laughter, and steadfast presence are irreplaceable. While her song has reached its earthly finale, its melody remains a permanent, beautiful echo in the hearts of all who loved her.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Diane’s life and legacy at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 4th, 2026 with a repast to follow.
A remote livestream of Diane's service will be available here.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation in Diane’s name to the Duke Cancer Institute Thoracic and Lung Cancers Fund.
