David Malbourne Stovall

September 15, 1941 — January 26, 2024

David Malbourne Stovall, age 82, died peacefully on Friday, January 26, 2024 at Duke University Medical Center following a period of declining health. He was born on September 15, 1941, in Stovall, North Carolina to the late Willard Holmes “Snooks” Stovall and Ruby Guthrie Stovall.

David graduated from Stovall High School and Fuller’s Business School. He also attended East Carolina University and North Carolina State University. He retired from the finance business in Oxford after over 40 years of service. He was a lifetime member of Stovall Baptist Church.

David was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren’s accomplishments, always sharing the activities of each with a big smile. He loved people and never met a stranger. He opened introductions with “where are you from and who was your family”. His passions were friends, history, geneaology, and collecting antiques and cut glass to the dismay of our mother. He was the family archivist and has left us with wonderful memories and stories passed down from other generations.

David is survived by his daughter, Caroline Stovall Folger and his three sons, David Fleming Stovall, Kevin Holmes Stovall (Lori), and Bryan Hal Stovall (Lizzie). He will be deeply missed by his six grandchildren, Jourdan, David and Kathryn Folger, Rebecca and Will Stovall and Wilder Stovall. He leaves behind his uncle, J.C. Guthrie, brother-in-law, Richard Crews (Laura), sisters-in-law, Eleanor Stovall and June Crews Cross (Joel), special son Frank Folger, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family too numerous to name.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Carolyn Fleming Crews Stovall, brother Gene Taylor Stovall, brother-in law Buddy Crews, and nephews, Neil Crews, Marty Crews and Jared Crews.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, February 2, 2024, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan. Services will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 11:00 am in the chapel at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan and officiated by the Reverend Johnny Yount. Burial will follow at the Stovall Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank all the many friends for their calls, visits, prayers and expressions of love during the past seven months. We are especially appreciative of the wonderful care team at Brantwood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center who showed such loving care to our dad.
