Obituary: In Loving Memory of Dan Winfield Hill, III

Dan Winfield Hill III, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2024 surrounded by family and loved ones.

Born on September 3, 1944, Dan was raised in Durham, North Carolina. A graduate of Southern High School and Duke University, he married, raised his family and continued to grow his deep roots in Durham. He went on to live a rich and rewarding life beyond his wildest dreams rooted in his values of service to others.

Dan was the son of the late Dan W. Hill Jr and Anne Sykes Hill. He is also predeceased by his twin sisters, Susan Hill and Nancy Hill. Dan is survived by his wife Susie Werber Hill, sons Dan W. Hill IV and Todd Hill, daughters-in-law Allison Hill and Erica Hill and grandchildren Dan W. Hill V, Smith Hill, Spencer Hill, and Taylor Hill. Dan is also survived by his brother, Frank Hill and his wife, Judy Hill and their children, Cameron Hill, James Hill, Patrick Hill.

Dan was widely known for his kindness, generosity, and genuine interest in the success of others. He valued every relationship and poured his endless energy into individuals and the many causes that were important to him. He loved his work and colleagues, which led to a series of successful entrepreneurial business endeavors including insurance, real estate and even stock car racing. Dan served on numerous boards including Cardinal State Bank, Yadkin Bank, and Durham Nativity School. He loved his hometown of Durham and served it dutifully including a term on Durham City Council and by helping to launch non-profits Durham Nativity School and Swingpals. Dan generously gave of his time and talents to support others and impacted his community in a quiet and humble manner.

Family was at the center of Dan's life. He cherished moments spent with Susie, his wife of 54 years. Dan could often be found with family and friends at Duke sporting events, on the golf course at Hope Valley Country Club, spending summers on Bald Head Island, walking the Duke Trail or cruising in his beloved T-Bird. He was a loving and present father for his two sons, as evidenced by being a best man in both of their weddings and he continues to serve as a role model to them as fathers. But most of all, his grandchildren were his pride and joy. He valued his special relationships with each one and was a constant supporter and encourager of them through the years.

Dan will be missed by his family, his many dear friends and everyone whose life he touched. His smile, warmth, and giving nature will be remembered fondly. Although Dan has left this world, his spirit will live on in the hearts of those that loved him and his legacy will have a lasting impact.

A celebration of Dan's life will be held Saturday, June 29, 2024 at 11am at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Durham, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Swingpals (www.swingpals.org) or Durham Nativity School (www.durhamnativity.org).

Rest in Peace, Dan. You will forever be in our hearts.
