DURHAM, NC – Charles “Chuck” Cushman, BGen, USMC, Retired, died on August 12th, 2026 at the age of 88 in the company of his beloved wife, Linda. He was born on December 28, 1937 to the late Clarence Cushman Jr. and Kathryn Williams Cushman.
After receiving his bachelor and law degrees from the University of North Carolina, Chuck was commissioned into the Marine Corps via OCS. Following completion of the six month Basic School at Quantico, he served as an Infantry Platoon Leader and a Company Commander. As a Judge Advocate, his assignments included Military Judge, Trial Counsel, and Staff Judge Advocate for three major Marine Corps commands as well as duty at Headquarters Marine Corps. Chuck was a graduate of the Naval Justice School, the Army’s Judge Advocate General’s School, as well as the Naval War College. In 1984, he was detailed by the Secretary of the Navy to the position of Assistant Judge Advocate General of the Navy (Military Law) and the Officer in Charge, Navy-Marine Corps Appellate Review Activity where he served until his retirement from active duty. He served with Force Logistics Command in Vietnam during 1969-70 before being deployed from Vietnam to The First Marine Aircraft Wing at Iwakuni, Japan.
Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Linda Given Cushman.
His final resting place will be at the St. Stephens Episcopal Church Columbarium, Durham, NC.
