Durham

Durham, NC – Carey Louise Ewing, 68, died peacefully at her home in Durham on Thursday, September 10, 2026. She was born on February 16, 1958, to the late Ted Ewing and Geraldine Devine Ewing.

Carey graduated from Venice High School in Venice, Florida, before earning her undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and her Juris Doctor from South Texas School of Law.

She began her legal career in Miami, Florida, where she practiced for several years before relocating to Durham, North Carolina. There, she founded Ewing Law Center and spent the next 30 years serving her clients and community through her legal practice.

Carey was a devoted Catholic whose faith was an important part of her life. She attended Mass faithfully and served her parish as a Eucharistic minister and reader.

Beyond her involvement in her church community, Carey had a deep commitment to helping others and particularly loved volunteering with the Durham Rescue Mission. She was an avid Notre Dame football fan and enjoyed cooking, reading, watching movies, spending time with her dogs, and, above all, spending time with her son. Her warmth and generosity extended far beyond her immediate family, and she became a “second mama”or “Mama Ewing” to countless people throughout Durham.

Carey is survived by her son, Michael, and her brother, Patrick. She was preceded in death by her parents, Geraldine and Ted; her sister, Sharon; and her brothers, Keith and E.J.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Carey's honor on Friday, September 25, at 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Durham, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Carey's memory to the Durham Rescue Mission, Ronald McDonald House Charities, or the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
