It is with heavy hearts and gratitude for a life beautifully lived, that we announce the passing of Bruni Criscione on May 15th, 2026 at the age of 85. She was surrounded by the family who meant the world to her, finding peace in the presence of those who brought her the greatest joy throughout her life.
Born in Long Island, NY, Bruni’s journey took her through Massachusetts and New Hampshire before she eventually settled in Durham, NC. She grew up helping her mother breed and raise standard poodles before attending the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, becoming a merchandiser and designer before marrying and building her family, always sewing clothes and showing her flair for fashion. A passionate gardener and artist, she was the proud owner of "Bruni’s Tole Painting Center," where she shared the gift of decorative painting with others for many years. Bruni truly loved spending time with her family and friends and was always ready for a new adventure. Until very recently she continued teaching painting, enjoyed her bowling league and attending Duke women’s basketball games, and was always there to support her six grandchildren. She was a devoted grandmother (“Gopka”), keeping up with every grandchild's interests, attending their events, and never missing a chance to spend time with them. She is survived by her sister, Sigelinde Matura, her three children: Lisa Criscione-Schreiber and her husband Eric Schreiber, Frank Criscione Jr. and his partner Melissa Brilliant, and Laura Hodgson and her husband Jason Hodgson, and also her six beloved grandchildren: Franz Criscione, Natalie Schreiber, Andrew Schreiber, Adriana Hodgson, Sophia Hodgson, and Anthony Hodgson. She is preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Frank Criscione (2006).
Bruni was an anchor in her family and a steady source of kindness to those around her. Her selflessness and generosity were boundless, and her warm smile left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
She will be profoundly missed by the family that adored her, and by her many dear friends.
