Bruce Oliver Ellis

Chapel Hill, NC – Bruce Oliver Ellis, age 75, passed away in his home on July 26, 2026. He was born on December 17, 1950, to Russell Oliver Ellis and Irene Elise Crater. Bruce graduated from Rutgers University, where he majored in Environmental and Agricultural Science. He had a 40-year career in the environmental services industry, working in the NC DOT Natural Environment Section, and also as the owner/operator of Ellis Aquatic Services.

Bruce’s interest in aquatic ecosystems was shaped long before his formal education began. In his childhood, he spent countless hours by the neighborhood brook, exploring for fish, frogs, birds, insects, and all other creatures that call the water their home. This interest evolved into a passion over the years as he studied the intricacies of freshwater life. It’s no surprise that his favorite character from his favorite book was Tom Bombadil in Lord of the Rings, a jolly and powerful nature spirit that loved the land and all its creatures.

In his youth, Bruce participated in high school wrestling and enjoyed boating and long-distance running. He loved dogs and was the owner of many throughout his life (Ollie, Rhiannon, Jasper, Schatzi).

Bruce was a quiet, gentle and dedicated father. He worked hard, without complaint, to provide for his family, and was quick to be generous towards them.

Bruce is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary Catherine Ellis; his son, Luke Ellis, his daughter-in-law, Kristina Ellis; his three grandchildren: Lucy, John and Joseph Ellis; his sister, Janet Pellek, and his brother, Wayne Ellis. He is preceded in death by his son, Matthew Ellis.

A funeral Mass will be held for Bruce at 10:00 am on Saturday, August 8th at the Newman Catholic Student Center Parish at UNC, 218 Pittsboro St. Chapel Hill, NC 27516. Inurnment will follow at 12:00 pm at St. Matthew Catholic Cemetery, 1001 Mason Rd. Durham, NC 27704.
