Barbara (Bobbie) Schmid Dapogny, age 92, died peacefully at Brookdale Chapel Hill Memory Care on May 13, 2023. She was born on June 13, 1930 to the late Loretta Maley Schmid and Otto Aloysius Schmid in Kansas City, MO.
Bobbie graduated from Avila College in Kansas City with a teaching degree. After graduation she moved to Annapolis, MD, where she taught for a year before marrying Ensign Robert John Dapogny on June 21, 1952, at the U.S. Naval Academy chapel. She then devoted her life to being the consummate mother and military wife, moving 15+ times while raising seven children and creating a comfortable home in each location. As the wife of a squadron commanding officer she was frequently called upon by the squadron's families in their time of need to lend a hand or a shoulder while the men were away on assignment.
Bobbie was an English teacher for many years, an avid reader, a devout Catholic and Eucharistic minister, an excellent seamstress, a gracious hostess, and a wonderful mother. Though widely acknowledged as a tone-deaf singer, she was a kind and compassionate listener, especially to those in need. Bobbie was a gentle soul who cared deeply about others, sponsoring many people through difficult times in their lives.
Bobbie is survived by Jeanne M. Antos (Curt) of Statesville, NC; Robert E. Dapogny (CaiWei) of Honolulu, HI; Denise D. Tolley (Gary) of Durham, NC; John P. Dapogny of Falls Church, VA; and Thomas A. Dapogny of Decatur, GA. Bobbie was preceded in death by her husband Bob Dapogny, her daughter Mary D. Scarcliff, grandson Robert N. Scarcliff, son Stephen F. Dapogny and granddaughter Abigail Dapogny. Bobbie was blessed with many beloved grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren. Being the last of eight girls in her family, she is also preceded in death by her seven older sisters.
Visitation with the family will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, at the Chapel at Hall-Wynne with a service to follow at approximately 2:30 p.m. She will be inurned with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery in 2024.
The family extends its deep appreciation for the loving care provided by the staff at Brookdale Chapel Hill Memory Care these last four years.
