Audrey E. Cumberland

Audrey E. Cumberland, of Durham, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2026, at the age of 88.

Audrey was born on September 16, 1937, in Timonium, Maryland, to Louis and Mildred Hergenrather. She was the second of three daughters and grew up in the Rodgers Forge community alongside her sisters, Millie Lou and Susan. Her early years were filled with family, friendship, and a strong sense of community that remained a guiding force throughout her life.

Audrey graduated from Towson High School and continued her education at Stephens Junior College in Missouri, where she received an AA degree. She began her professional career as a bookkeeper at Durham Sporting Goods, demonstrating the strong work ethic and dedication that would define her life.

In 1957, Audrey married Richard Cumberland in Towson, Maryland. Together they built a loving home and raised two sons: Richard, born in 1963, and Brian, born in 1965. Later, Audrey and Richard moved to Durham, North Carolina, where they became active members of the community.

Audrey’s sister Susan joined her in Durham after accepting a position with Duke University. The two shared a home and formed a close and enduring bond, remaining inseparable companions until Susan’s passing in 2014. Together, they were devoted patrons of the Durham Performing Arts Center and delighted in attending touring Broadway productions.

Audrey found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She was an avid reader and a dedicated volunteer at the Durham Public Library, where her efforts helped support fundraising initiatives. She had a passion for crafts, especially collecting and creating Christmas ornaments. In her later years, she discovered a love for oil painting, producing work that brought her great pride and enjoyment. Above all, Audrey cherished time spent with her family.

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Millie Lou and Susan; and her former husband, Richard Cumberland.

She is survived by her son Richard and his wife, Paula; her son Brian; her granddaughter Rachel; and several nieces and nephews, all of whom will carry her memory forward.

Audrey will be remembered for her kindness, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to her family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A private family service will be held.
