Alexander "Alex" Cole Birdsong, 20, of Durham, North Carolina, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.
Born on December 8, 2005, Alex was a lifelong Durham resident and a proud graduate of the Durham School of the Arts (DSA). Following graduation, Alex continued his journey of growth and service; he was currently a student at Wake Technical Community College and a dedicated member of the Army National Guard, where he served with distinction as an Alpha 25 Communication Specialist.
Alex was easy to find in a crowd—not just because of his signature flaming red hair, but because of the genuine warmth he radiated. He truly "knew no strangers," possessing a rare heart that accepted everyone exactly as they were. His quick wit and love for making others laugh made him a cherished friend to many. Alex lived by the mantra "YOLO" (You Only Live Once)—his own modern-day Carpe Diem—and he truly lived every bit of it.
Alex lived life in motion, and the skate park was his second home. It was his community and his creative sanctuary, where he spent countless hours perfecting his craft and connecting with others. His passion for the sport led him to help co-found the DSA Skateboarding Club in the winter of 2024, ensuring that other high school youth had a place to ride and belong. Recently, he had also discovered a love for rock climbing, eagerly diving into the sport and exploring the challenge of the climb.
While he loved his family dearly, Alex was a social butterfly who, in true 20-year-old fashion, was much more likely to be found out and about with his vast circle of friends than sitting at home. If there was a plan being made, an adventure to be had, or a session at the park, Alex was there.
Alex is preceded in death by his beloved sister, Kailee Birdsong.
He is survived by his devoted parents, Robby and Melissa Birdsong; his sisters, Britany Henderson and Isabella Birdsong; and the countless friends who became his second family at the skate park and beyond.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service in Durham.
A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel, with Pastor Charlie McNeil officiating. The service will conclude with full military honors in recognition of Alex’s service to his country.
The family is under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
