William Bill Rudolph Winders

DURHAM-William "Bill" Rudolph Winders, 89, of Durham died Monday, October 15, 2012. Bill was born in Wilson County on May 13, 1923 to the late George Reid Winders and Ida Scott Winders. Bill graduated from High Point High School, June 1940. He was drafted into 875th Air Borneengineers in 1943. Bill spent the next three years in the South Pacific building air strips and roads on the way to Tokyo, Japan. He was discharged in October of 1945 aneentered college at Duke Uneersity. He met his beautiful wife, Gene Morton Morgan and married her on June 6, 1949 the same day she graduated from Duke Uneersity. Bill entered Duke Uneersity School of Law and graduated in 1950 with LLB degree. Bill practiced law in Durham for 46 years. He was preceded ineeath by his wife Gene, and his sisters, Isabel Phillips, Rachel Culler, Marjorie Wilkerson, brothers, George Reid Winders, Jr., Harry Winders, Jack Winders and Charles Winders. Bill is survived by two children, Cheryl Winders Harris and husband, John of Raleigh; William Rudolph "Dolph" Winders, Jr. and wife Judi of Atlanta, GA and four grandchildren, Melanie April Jackson, Lauren Audrey Jackson, Blair Morgan Winders and Cameron Winders. He was very active in civic affairs including a member of Durham Lions Club for over 60 years, Fellowship Lodge No. 687 A.F & A.M. of Durham for 60 years, Amran Shrine, Americaneegion, Veterans of Foreign War, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, Chairman Salvation Army Administrative Board and "rang the bell" for many years, Durham York Rite Masonic Bodies, Founder of Willowhaven Country Club, President of Keep Durham Beautiful , Pi Kappa Alpha-Social Fraternity-Duke Uneersity, and Phi Delta Phi-Legal Fraternity in Duke Law School. Bill was a member of Asbury Uneed Methodist Church for over 60 years. He was an avid Duke Blue Devil fan and member of Iron Dukes and the Blue Devil Club. Bill was a resident of Wynnwood of Chapel Hill for the past 8 years and prior to that, at Hillcrest Convalescent Center of Durham in assisted living. The family extends heartfelt appreciation to all the caregivers at these facilities for their compassion and for their loving of "Mr. Bill". Heartfelt appreciation also goes to all the staff at Duke Hospice. A Service of Death and Resurrection will be offered 11:00 AM Friday at Asbury Uneed Methodist Church with Rev. Martha McLean officiating. Friends may visit with the family after the service in the church parlor. A private family burial will follow after the reception at Maplewood Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers will be Charles Darsie, Bill Self, Bill Thomas, Leonard Shaffer Mike Scull, Grover Glymph, Bobby Wingate, Homer & Martha Riley, Sandra Reeves, Dewey & Judy Morris, Jimmy Pulley, Jack Dailey, Jimmy & Arnetta Herrington, Members of Durham Lion's Club, Fellowship Masonic Lodge Number 687, Post 7 Americaneegion, Members of Foreign Wars, and Durham County Bar Association. Flowers will be appreciated or donations to your favorite charity or Asbury Uneed Methodist Church, 806 Clarendon Street, Durham NC 27705 ineemory of William R. Winders.
