Thelma Doby Wiggins

Thelma Doby Wiggins, age 93, former resident of Forest Rd and Croasdaile Apartments, completed her earthly journey on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at the Hock Family Pavilion and passed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Wiggins was born in Cheraw, SC to the late Joseph Wood Doby and Pattie Thompson Doby. She was a graduate of Braggtown High School, class of 1934. Mrs. Wiggins married Joseph Spencer Wiggins in 1936, who predeceased her in 1984. Mrs. Wiggins loved being surrounded by her family. An active member of First Baptist Church, she was formerly an assistant teacher in the children's department; she helped in the church kitchen; and was a Care Leader in the Loyalty Class. Surviving are one daughter, Rebecca Tucker Manuel and her husband, Roger, of Durham; one son, Fredrick Spencer Wiggins and his wife, Betsy, of Durham; one brother, Billy C. Doby of Durham; one sister, Inez Rackley of Durham; three grandchildren, Susan Tucker Swaim, Michael Alan Manuel and Mark Edwin Manuel; two great-grandchildren, Fletcher Swaim and Jonah Manuel and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, August 3, 2009 from First Baptist Church, 414 Cleveland Street. The Rev. Dr. Aneew Davis and the Rev. Andy Winn will preside. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 3:00-5:00 PM at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter at 5100 Russell Road. Pallbearers will include Jack Evans, Lin Whichard, Arnie Brogan, Herb Bullard, Tom Geers and Joe Doby. Honorary Pallbearers will include F. J. Melton, Bucky Waters, Jeff Russell, Tom Hunter and Gary Doby. Memorials maybe made to First Baptist Church, 414 Cleveland Street, Durham, NC 27701. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at the Hock Family Pavilion and to the many special friends who made her last earthly days so very memorable.
