The Rev. Charles Spence Hubbard, 95, of Pittsboro, died Monday, February 16, 2009, peacefully in his home. Rev. Hubbard was born and raised in Sanford. While attending UNC at Chapel Hill, he lettered in both track and football, and he held the conference indoor broadjump record for many years. He was a retired Uneed Methodist pastor, a member of the North Carolina Conference, serving churches in Roseboro, Hillsborough, Trinity UMC in Raleigh, Uneersity UMC in Chapel Hill, Wilson UMC, Duke Memorial UMC in Durham, Trinity UMC in Sanford, and Hickory Mountain UMC in Chatham County. Mr. Hubbard was also very active in the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Commission, serving under Gov. Cherry to Gov. Hunt. He was a master gardener, supplying plants and vegetables to his family and friends. Mr. Hubbard was preceded ineeath by his parents, Archie Monee Hubbard and Mina York Hubbard; his brother, E. A. Hubbard, all of Sanford; his grandson, Rob Forrest; and his wife of 67 years, Mercer Reeves Hubbard. He is survived by his daughter Rev. Martha Hubbard Forrest; three sons, Charles S. Hubbard, Jr., Thomas Edwin Hubbard, and John Spangh Hubbard; twelve grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 21, 2009 in Pittsboro Uneed Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorial gifts may be given to Pittsboro UMC.
